MULINDI - A group of over 30 officials from Gasabo District, yesterday, toured the ongoing agricultural exhibition at Mulindi in Kigali.

Sadat Benimana, the Agronomist of Bumbogo Sector said that the tour would facilitate increasing agricultural production in the area through the use of modern farming techniques demonstrated at the exhibition.

"Our sector has fertile soils but farmers get fewer profits due to limited knowledge on modern farming methods. As an agronomist, I will pass on the lessons learnt from here to all farmers in the sector,” Benimana said.

He added that more agricultural research is needed for the farmers in the district, especially those in the rural areas, to attain maximum output.

Louis Ndaruhutse, a farmer from Nduba sector said: "I thank the district management for organising this tour and I will make sure that our sector forms an agro-based cooperative with the aim of advocating modern farming”.

He also requested the district to organise similar trips to enable them gain other experiences and skills in the agricultural sector.

Denise Uwimana from the Rwanda Silk Farmers’ Federation (RSFF) said "I would encourage more Rwandans to invest in silk farming because it generates a lot of income in a short period of time.”

"Our district has a huge chunk of land which is under-utilised in terms of agriculture, so this tour was aimed at learning how best we can bridge this gap by carrying out modern farming,” Gasabo Mayor, Willy Ndizeye, said.

He pointed out that the use of modern farming methods and irrigation would help fight poverty and famine in the district and facilitate the achievement of sustainable development in the district.
