NYAMASHEKE - Police and local leaders in Nyamasheke District have advised long distance truck drivers to park and rest after driving through Nyungwe forest.

The move was initiated to decrease the number of accident along this route.

At the launch of the Traffic Week in the area, authorities said that fatigue was to blame for accidents along the Rusizi-Nyamasheke highway, particularly at Gisakura, in Bushekeri Sector.

The authorities pointed out that the route has many sharp bends, which can be dangerous if the drivers are exhausted.

Police also sensitised pedestrians on their rights and how to avoid accidents.

"Pedestrians and drivers should all play an active role in preventing accidents,” Nyamasheke Mayor, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, said.

Humps were also proposed as further measures to curb accidents at Gisakura.

In Gashonga, Rusizi District, police also educated drivers and the public about traffic rules and regulations.

Reckless driving and over speeding were cited among the main causes of accidents.
