KIGALI - The Mayor of Kigali City, Fidele Ndayisaba, yesterday met with local revenue collection officers in all the three city districts of Nyarugenge, Kicukiro and Gasabo.

The meeting was aimed at building the capacity of tax collectors to ensure that they carry out their duties effectively.

Addressing reporters, the Mayor said that there was need to educate and sensitise tax collectors to effect public finance management basing on revenue collection and expenditure.

"We want to build an effective tax collection system that will see an increase in revenues,” Ndayisaba said.

He explained that although a survey has yet to be conducted to establish losses, there were gaps in tax administration that needed to be urgently bridged.

One of the tax collectors in Nyamirambo Sector in Nyarugenge, Esther Nyirandategetse, who attended the meeting, commended the initiative saying it was timely.

"There have been many changes of tax administrators in the city and this forum gives us the basics on how we ought to execute our work,” Nyirandategetse said in an interview.

However, she pointed out that creating a system to educate the public on the various forms of taxes would highly contribute towards effective services.

"Many times, when we are in the field, people say they are not aware of some taxes levied against them,” Nyirandategetse said.

Some of the business operators The New Times spoke to said more effort was needed to create awareness, not only among the business community, but whoever is meant to pay tax.
