I always see my primary six nieces, Denise Teta taking her time to listen to news on Rwanda Television.

However tired she may be, she says, "My teacher will beat me if I do not write at least something I have listened to from today’s news stories”.

Like any other parent you may think this is too much pressure for your child but I think it is right for them to watch and listen to daily news stories.

This provides a basis for building listening and analytical skills in young children.  They need to know what is going on in and around their country.

It also broadens a child’s knowledge because they are prepared to answer know current affairs that are not taught in their curriculum.

However, some news stories may be very scary and inappropriate depending on a child’s age or maturity they may not yet understand the distinctions between fact and fantasy.

Some children take what they see and hear too real and may eventually internalize it, making it seem like the same thing is going to happen to them.

That is why parental guidance is important when children are watching television.

After all, education is not only looking at the blackboard at school but, also listening to radio and viewing the television news is important.

Therefore, parents and teachers should encourage their children to be active listeners.
