Construction work on the Kagitumba-Mirama Hills one-stop border post at the Rwanda-Uganda border is underway to smoothen cross border trade between the two countries.
Once fully functional, the border post is anticipated to handle over 60 percent of heavy commercial and passenger vehicles that cross from either country, easing transits on the busy Gatuna border post.

The project was started by Trademark East Africa (TMEA), a multi-donor funded agency which provides support for regional trade and economic integration in East Africa.
According to TMEA, the one-stop border post will shorten crossing time for goods and people by combining two stops for national border control processing.

"It will consolidate border control functions in a shared space for exiting one country and entering another,” a statement from TMEA reads.

"The post will use simplified procedures and joint processing whenever appropriate, thereby reducing the time for trucks and people to cross this border.

"TMEA is working with the governments of Rwanda and Uganda, as well as related agencies to turn the Kagitumba-Mirama Hills one-stop border post into a reality.”

Officials from TMEA visited the border post last week to review inception plans with both Rwandan and Ugandan government officials.
