GASABO - Employees of the Public Sector Capacity Building Secretariat (PSCBS), over the weekend, visited 124 genocide orphans drawn from 20 families in Kimironko Sector, Gasabo District, and donated an assortment of goods worth Rwf 1m.

The donation included food stuffs.

"As we commemorate the Genocide, we believe it’s equally important to come nearer to these children, comfort them to fill the gaps and also as a sign of togetherness,” the PSCBS Executive Secretary, Stella Ford Mugabo said.

Mugabo encouraged the orphans to focus and work hard for a bright future despite the effects of the genocide. During the visit, the staff had prayers and shared messages of encouragement.

The orphans live together in houses constructed for them by the government. Under their association Duhumurizanye, some of the orphans are already studying at university level while others are in secondary schools.

Speaking on behalf of the orphans, Serge Nzeyimana, appreciated the government`s efforts in supporting them, saying they (orphans) now have a bright future.

"We can now see the value of life unlike before when some of us did not even value our existence,” said Nzeyimana, a First-Year student at Kigali Independent University (ULK).

He explained that it was impossible at one time to think of getting an education since they had no parents.

Nzeyimana said that, "It’s a land mark in our lives to achieve something we never expected.”
