RUBAVU - Six people are reported dead an accident that took in Rubavu district. The police say three others are in a critical condition at Gisenyi main Hospital.

A Toyota Dyna pick up registration RAB 345C travelling from Ngororero to Rubavu swerved off the road resulting in the deaths and injuries yesterday at 5: 00 am. Police attributed the accident to breaking failure.

"The driver was speeding and the vehicle was overloaded which exerted pressure on the breaking system hence the accident,” said Theos Badege, the police spokesperson.

The vehicle was carrying nine people and twelve cows when it overturned.

Badege encouraged drivers to always take their vehicles for mechanical check to minimise accidents.

"We are launching a countrywide traffic week campaign tomorrow to raise awareness about road safety and how to prevent accidents,” added Badege.

The police also call upon people to play a role in helping curb road accidents.
