Every year, Rwanda joins the rest of the world to celebrate the world environment day (WED) and dedicates a whole week to the activities of raising awareness on environment sustainability.

At the national level, the celebrations were marked by maintaining trees that were planted on WED 2010 in Nyandungu wetland, Gasabo District.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Caroline Kayonga, yesterday pointed out that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment.
"We have to join hands and protect our environment,” she underscored.

Gen James Kabarebe, the Minister of Defence who was also the guest of honour, thanked everybody who participated in the exercise and called upon all Rwandans to keep fighting against environmental degradation.

"Environmental protection is an initiative that will benefit us all. And it will continue to benefit the future generation,” he said.

The country is implementing the "Clean and Green Campaign” where a number of activities aiming to clean and green the environment are planned.
