KARONGI- A 56-year old man is currently in jail after he was arrested while attempting to bribe a court official in Karongi District.
Celestin Harerimana was caught red-handed as he tried to bribe a court clerk ,Alexander Uwimana, with Rwf4000.
Karongi Intermediate Court President, Adolph Udahemuka, said that Uwimana tipped off security officials after he was approached to fabricate a case involving land wrangles in Harerimana’s family.
"A series of times, the suspect tried to offer money to interfere with documents regarding land misunderstandings in his family,” Udahemuka said.
In a telephone interview with The Sunday Times, the spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Charles Kaliwabo, said that a program is underway to strengthen the judiciary to reduce crime, especially corruption.
"It is a good development that court officers are helping to track down corrupt individuals and measures are in place to further strengthen them to support our anti-corruption campaign,” Kaliwabo said.
He disclosed that in some instances, residents have also been involved in tracking down corrupt court officials and this is also commendable.
Recently, at Mugombwa lower instance court in Gisagara District, a court clerk known as Jean Leonard Muribi, was arrested over corruption allegations after a tip off from residents. In Kicukiro District, a judge in Nyarugunga is under trial for suspected corruption
