Commuters have often lamented the duping culture of commuter taxi conductors though nothing is being done to help us. Last week, I boarded a taxi from the Ministry of Justice bus stage and disembarked at Kisimenti but the conductor charged me Rwf190.

Normally, the fare should be Rwf100 for such short distances but in this instance, the conductor insisted that I pay Rwf190 and even threatened me.

A week before, passengers travelling to Kimironko also experienced an ugly scene when an enraged passenger slapped a commuter taxi conductor, accusing him of hiking transport fares.

Methinks that the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) should come out and issue a new directive that regulates fares. Not so long ago, RURA announced that a kilometre costs Rwf19.

Certainly, a passenger travelling from MINIJUST to Kiseminti cannot be charged Rwf190, the price for a distance of 10 kilometres. I think, this is fleecing passengers, an issue that RURA should redress urgently.
