NYAGATARE- Umutara Polytechnic University, through its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, has launched a research program to enhance livestock production in the Eastern Province.

In the first phase, the research will be conducted in the districts of Nyagatare and Gatsibo and selected sectors within Kayonza district.

According to Dr. Francis Mbuza, coordinator of the research project and dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the university, the project will, among other tasks, evaluate the current animal feed technologies.

"This research project will help farmers acquire skills in modern farming technologies,” he said.

Dr. Mbuza added that during the course of the research, intensive training will be provided to farmers on improving natural pastures, dry season feeding practices and overcoming mineral deficiencies among dairy cattle.

The university’s acting Rector, Dr. Eugene Ndabaga, says the project is timely and would improve milk production.

"This research is the first of its kind in the province and I am sure it will bring happiness to farmers,” he said.

He added that one of the university’s primary tasks is to provide community service.

In an interview, Celestin Mabwire, a veterinary official from Musheri Sector in Nyagatare District, welcomed the university initiative, adding that the project would help them improve farming methods.
