MUHANGA- A shortage of bananas in Muhanga district led to an increase in prices on the retail market with the cost of a bunch of the commodity rising to Rwf3,000 from Rwf2,500.
Retailers said that six months ago, the cost was between Rwf2,000 and 2,500.
"The farmers are now benefiting more because there is high demand. Retailers can only sell at Rwf3,200,” said Marie Rose Mukarugema, a retail trader at a local market.
The farmers attributed the shortage to a poor harvest occasioned by bad weather.
