The Minister of Education, Damien Habumuremye, has called for a uniform curriculum to be used across the region as a way of improving the quality of education.

He noted that if a similar curriculum is adopted, graduates across the region would be able to compete favourably on the job market. 

"Quality systems should be implemented to ensure that Rwandan students meet national standards in curriculums of higher education and can compete with those from other universities all over East Africa,” said Habumuremye.

The Minister made the remarks during a meeting with the Rectors and Vice Rectors of both private and public higher Institutions of learning, under the theme, ‘how to streamline the quality product from higher learning institutions’.

The Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Professor Geoffrey Rugege, emphasised that each institution should have a set of guidelines and benchmark on admission standards to produce quality students.

"We also want to improve qualify of staff at higher institutions. If a lecturer teaches degree students, he should at least have a masters but not just a degree as well. We want to implement this benchmark so the students don’t feel cheated,” Rugege said.
