EASTERN PROVINCE

GATSIBO — The police together with local defence personnel last Friday joined district authorities and residents to help in the building of houses for the genocide survivors and the needy.

During the exercise that began at 9.00 am in Karengye cell in Kabarore sector, the group made 1,800 bricks, some of which were carried to construction sites.

Nicholas Rwaka, the district director of good governance said that construction of 20 houses has started in this cell alone; by the residents through communal work.

"All cells are involved and people are doing the work willingly because they realise the need to provide decent housing to the underprivileged," Rwaka said.

Out of the 314 local defence personnel, over 220 participated in the exercise.

Addressing the group, Richard Rubagumya, the Ag District Police commander noted that a lot was lost during the wanton killings of the 1994 Genocide, and that all citizens needed to partake in the peace building process.

"The police should not only uphold the law by apprehending wrong doers, but also work closely with the local community in assisting the underprivileged members. By so doing, he said, the force earns respect and trust from the public."

Building of houses for Genocide survivors has been going on across the country geared towards enhancing peace and reconciliation.
