KARONGI-District leaders say they will embark on a massive agricultural programme aimed at boosting economic development in the next financial year.
The leaders presented the plan at a meeting, last week, to celebrate last year’s achievements and set targets for the next fiscal year.
They also highlighted other top priorities to include mobilising residents to join the Sector Savings Cooperatives (Umurenge Sacco) and development of the education sector by building more classrooms for the nine-year Basic Education program.
For a second consecutive year, Rugabano Sector emerged first while Gishyita was named the worst performer in the district.
Rugabano registered tremendous achievements in agriculture and health.
In an interview with The New Times, Rugabano’s Executive Secretary Cyriaque Niyonsaba, attributed the success to cooperation and hard work among the sector leaders.
He said, "There was significant contribution by all local leaders in ensuring that we achieve what we got. Each of them played a big role by fostering cooperation to ensure that we met all our targets.”
Niyonsaba revealed that an association of public servants at the sector level donates two cows every month to poor residents.
Sebastien Hakizimana, the Karongi vice Mayor in charge of economic development, challenged all local leaders to put more efforts in what they do to portray the best image of the district.
