EASTERN PROVINCE

GATSIBO — Over 314 local defense personnel in Gatsibo district on Friday received new uniforms.

Handing over the items at a ceremony attended by district officials and the police, the mayor, John Murego cautioned the local defence staff against indulging in crime.

"The number of rape cases and child abuse has shot up recently in the district and you people are responsible for curbing crime. You should double your efforts in fighting against crime in your sectors," Murego said.

Recent crimes in the district have been blamed on drug abuse and the consumption of local brew commonly called Kanyanga.

Receiving the items, the members said with the help of the recently elected police committees, under community policing, they would reduce crime by at least 30 percent. During the same occasion, all members of other security organs were advised to be vigilant and ready to handle cases of trauma as we approach the mourning period, during which many people are affected.
