Rwamagana- A fundraising drive has realised Rwf 2.6million to support about 100 victims of the recent heavy rains that recently hit Rwamagana district.

The event organised by local authorities in Rwamagana in conjunction with other stakeholders was graced by renowned Rwandan musicians, Miss Jojo and Sergeant Robert.

Rwamagana Mayor, Nehemie Uwimana said an evaluation of the damage caused showed that over 200 households were in dire need of financial assistance.

He noted that most of the affected residents would harvest nothing this season, as their crops were completely destroyed.

"This is an important initiative...we shouldn’t tire to help the storm victims. I can assure you that the money will be of great use to the needy in the four affected sectors,” he said.

Jamal Habimana, the Vice Chairman of Rwamagana District Advisory Council, who chaired the fundraising Committee, reiterated the need for local solutions to support the affected residents.

He commended Rwamagana residents for their great concern to help the storm’s victims.

"Kigabiro, the worst affected sector, is slowly recovering...aid in form of food, clothes, books and cash was extended to storm victims. I am happy that most of it was home made,” he said.

One of the victims, Juliana Nyirahabimana, 58, could not hide her excitement, when she was assured that the money for rebuilding her demolished house was available.

"I am number ten on the list...I am sure my turn is next after this fundraising. My house is down and I live with neighbours; it would be great if
I got my own house once again.”
