KIGALI - Three suspects are in custody in connection with allegedly conspiring to murder a man over Rwf 1.5million.

Emmanuel Gapfizi, James Mulindahabi and John Gahigana residents of Kiramuruzi were arrested in Kimisagara.

During the arrest, an automatic weapon and a hand grenade were recovered, weapons Police say, were to be used in the murder.

According to Police, Gapfizi hatched the plan to murder Canisius Munyentwali after the latter refused to return a house he had held as a guarantee for a loan worth Frw 1.5 million.

"I bought the Uzi gun and the grenade to kill Munyentwali because I felt that I had already lost the case and had no hope of ever regaining my house,” Gapfizi said, adding that he asked Gahigana and Mulindahabi to help him kill Munyentwali. He told Police that he bought the gun from a demobilised soldier.

"Gapfizi approached me seeking help to deal with Munyentwali who had taken his house.,” Gahigana said.

Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Theos Badege, cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

"Rwandans should pass through proper channels to ensure that justice is served rather than taking matters in their own hands,” Badege said.

He acknowledged the public’s role in helping to curb crime, saying that citizens should always come forward with information regarding any dubious activities.

"Close collaboration between security organs and the public has helped foil criminal activities,” Badege said.
 
The spokesperson encouraged those who own weapons illegally to hand them over.

"Voluntarily handing over these weapons is not punishable by law; but if one is found in possession of a weapon illegally, then he will be charged,” Badege warned.
