KIGALI - Following the recent move by the proprietors of the upcoming New Century Hotel to acquire the land currently occupied by Nyarugenge District headquarters, the district intends to construct its new offices valued at Rwf 1 billion.

Felicien Kagisha, the district vice Mayor in charge of finance and economic development confirmed this yesterday in a telephone interview.

"The funds to construct new premises were included in the next financial budget – 2011/2012,” Kagisha said.
The district draft budget worth over Rwf 11 billion, whose biggest portion (49.09%) was allocated to development projects, was presented to the Parliamentary Commission on Budget early this month.

Kagisha, however, said that the district is yet to acquire land to put up the offices.

"It is a process, first to acquire land and make design of the block and even money to do all these. We are waiting for the developers to pay us…but we hope they will pay us before the end of the year,” said Kagisha.
The developers are supposed to pay Rwf 1.2 billion for the land.

The Nyarugenge site along with the former Rwanda Television premises is set for extension of other hotel facilities and a parking yard.

"We will relocate after they (hotel proprietors) pay us…and that is when we will rent (the premises) where will be operating from as we await the completion of the new offices,” Kagisha explained.
