Provincial Governor, Aime Bosenibamwe advised residents of Bukure Sector in Gicumbi District to improve the quality of their bananas for better incomes.
Touring the district last week, the governor said the quality of their produce would determine the prices.
"The banana you are currently harvesting should be increased and sold at a higher price,” he said.
He commended farmers for properly tending to their banana plantations.
Speaking to The New Times, the farmers expressed the need for financial support to help them equip the banana farming school in the area that was established to impart modern farming skills.
"We can harvest the best bananas here if more residents come to the school for skills, but we lack equipment to reach out to them,” said Jean Paul Habiyambere, a farmer and facilitator at the banana farming school.
The District’s Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi, urged the residents to continue to enhance small scale farming. He further reminded them to always value cows which were donated to them under the Girinka Program (one cow per poor family).
The Governor toured several other development programs in the district including schools and the modern housing construction scheme, where 681decent houses have been put up with 45 still under construction.
Col. Evaliste Murenzi, who is in charge of Rwanda Defense Forces in Gicumbi, told the residents to maintain peace and security, saying they are the pillars of development.
