Various stakeholders met Local Government minister, James Musoni to discuss the implementation of programmes that are geared towards improving the lives of the people.

High on the list of the Friday meeting was the Nyakatsi eradication campaign, performance contacts (Imihigo) and the enhancement in the use of ICT and social media at the local levels.

In his opening remarks, Musoni challenged the leaders to fight injustice and be responsive and accountable. "Seek to promote social economic transformation through teamwork and patriotism,”

He requested local government leaders to always serve the population. Musoni called for openness during the discussions and make positive recommendations that will better serve the nation.

Participants in the one-day meeting thanked Rwandans and development partners who the people acquire decent homes in the Nyakatsi eradication campaign. The campaign is currently 85 percent complete.

They pledged to apply more efforts to have the thatched houses completely eradicated by June 2011. The deadline was previously set for end May.

Local leaders vowed to improve on their communication within and outside their areas of operation. They also committed to make use of ICT and social media for communication purposes.

Local leaders welcomed the recent Cabinet resolution that granted local government with various facilitation packages such as remuneration of  sector executive secretaries and villages leaders in recognition of voluntary services they render to the nation.
