KIGALI - Akilah Institute, a college for young women that offers a two-year diploma in leadership and hospitality management, yesterday, hosted members of the public to an Open House.
This was done to promote awareness of the institution and encourage the Rwandan girl child to enrol for further education.
Carol Rugege, the Director of Admissions, noted that so many girls finish secondary education but are unable to continue to university due to various reasons. Some can’t afford tuition while others study and are unable to complete.
"Akilah is here to fill the gap. We have set up a support system and an internship program to empower the young Rwandan woman with skills and confidence through our career focus program,” said Rugege.
She noted that tourism is the fastest growing economy in the country and that thousands of jobs will be created in the sector. She added that it was a great opportunity that the institute is teaching tourism pointing out that the students would compete for these jobs instead of hiring expatriates.
According to Rugege, the institute is providing, nurturing, and empowering education at a low cost.
Noella Abijuru, one of the students, said that she is getting lots of opportunities through Akilah that she had only dreamt about.
"Recently I had a chance to meet with President Paul Kagame and even ask him questions. Through Akilah, I have received a scholarship to Hong Kong. My public speaking and leadership skills have also improved,” Abijuru said.
Another student, Florence Mukangenzi, said that the institute is empowering women in Rwanda and giving them the opportunity to discover their potential.
"My self esteem has been boosted. I did not know that I could confidently speak in public. I am learning a lot about leadership and hospitality.”
