KIGALI - African Volleyball Confederation president, Dr. Emr Elwani, yesterday paid a visit to Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre to pay homage to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
 
He was accompanied by CAVB Technical Director, Howyda Mondy, and Rwanda’s volleyball supremo, Charles Uyisenga,
Elwani who is in the country in support of the Genocide Memorial Volleyball Tournament, placed the wreath before touring the rest of  the centre.

"Education should be the main key in this long struggle to learn from our past,” he said.

"I hope we are all together in fighting horrible events like this in future,” he said, adding that taking time to visit the memorial was an important eye opener.

"A lot of people don’t like to remember dreadful events like this, but it is essential to remember and learn in order to move on. I’m glad that Rwanda is shedding light on the atrocities that took place here”.

He also commended the tremendous steps the country has taken in embracing unity and reconciliation as it moves forward.

 "It was a very moving experience to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and place a wreath there to honour the lives lost to genocide,” said Howyda.
"The mass graves are a clear reminder of the cost of ignorance,” she said.

The Genocide memorial volleyball tournament was inaugurated in 1996. This year it has attracted 26 teams form Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Congo Brazzaville, among others.
