RUTSIRO- The National Land Office, yesterday, announced that a total of eight million land titles will be issued when the ongoing land registration exercise comes to an end.
Dr Emmanuel Nkurunziza, the Director General at the Land Centre, made the revelation in Rutsiro District while handing over the registration documents to land owners for the first time.
"We have so far completed registration of 5.2 million land owners and it is expected that 8 million titles will be issued when the exercise finally ends,” Nkurunziza said.
He urged the residents to adhere to the registration exercise saying the opportunity to have a land title has very many advantages.
"There is a possibility of getting a loan from the bank if you possess a land title. This can help to improve your economic status,” he told them.
In an Interview with Sunday Times, Nkurunziza acknowledged that there are some problems and setbacks which frustrate the land registration campaign.
He pointed out polygamous families and other forms of internal family misunderstandings as some of the most common problems .
Nkurunziza dismissed allegations that government initiated the programme as a ‘trick’ to easily get taxes from residents.
Jean Mfitumukiza, one of those who acquired a land title, concurred with Nkurunziza that apart from getting the confidence and security over one’s property, social and economic stability can be achieved.
