After successfully hosting the Zone V basketball championships back in February, Rwanda has been chosen to host the zonal club championship.
According to the local basketball governing body, Ferwaba, the championship will run from September 8-15 at Amahoro indoor stadium.
The one-week event is open to both male and female clubs and is expected to merge clubs from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt, Zanzibar, Burundi and hosts Rwanda.
All countries are expected to field one club in both categories (men and women) apart from Rwanda and Kenya.
Ferwaba Secretary General said that being the event hosts, Rwanda has been allowed to field two clubs in each category while Kenya automatically gets the green light to field two clubs after winning the 2005 Zone V club championships that were staged in Nairobi, Kenya.
"In the men’s category, Rwanda will be represented by APR and Espoir while Rwanda National University and APR will represent the country in the ladies’ category,” Lucien Mugabo confirmed.
It will be the first time that Rwanda will be hosting the championships that were inducted back in the 1980s.
The competition will be jointly organised and sponsored by Ferwaba and the ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture.Ends
