Kirehe-The State Minister for Energy and Water resources Eng Colletha Ruhamya, and her Tanzanian counterpart, Adam Malima, Tuesday assessed development of Rusumo Falls Hydro-power project.

The two ministers accompanied by a large delegation of other high ranking government officials from both countries asked the project engineers to quickly complete the study and pave way for its implementation.

Rusumo hydroelectricity project was first explored in 1972, but remained just on paper.

"We expect generation of 90 watts from the hydroelectricity project ...feasibility studies were carried out, and we want quick implementation. A new bridge over River Akagera that connects the two countries is also in the pipeline.”

She added that a new bridge would meet the demand of heavy load trucks.

"The capacity of the old bridge is not more than 8000 tons...this is very low which is why we need to increase it,” she said.

The Tanzanian Minister, Adam Malima warned the engineers against unnecessary delays in the project study.

 "We want no more excuses from this important project’s engineers. We want engineers to give us alternatives and not one line of thought,” he said.

The project for construction of Rusumo International Bridge and one stop Post facilities is partly financed by Japanese Grant Aid Project.
