Bugesera-Local leaders are optimistic that Nyamata would attain higher status once the planned multimillion development infrastructure is put in place.

The remarks were made Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting that convened to review the town’s development plan.

Besides the impending international airport, a modern public market, multi-million taxi- parks, and housing estates have been earmarked in what could revitalise the town, according to the development strategy.

The plan, which is in line with a programme to transform small and rural towns, is intended to rehabilitate the town's infrastructure and enhance its ability to attract tourists and big business.

Residents of the district and beyond are rushing to tap potential opportunities.

"I am going to build a hotel because the airport will bring visitors,” said Alphonse Musoni, a businessman in the town.

Bugesera District Mayor, Louis Rwagaju, advised investors to seize the opportunity and buy land from the rapidly developing town.

"Local people will no longer have to travel long distances for simple services as we look forward to having an international airport in our midst. Nyamata will soon have a different face,” he said.

The Governor of Eastern Province, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, however, cautioned local leaders and the business community in the area not to take the opportunities for granted.

Noting that Nyamata was privileged because of its proximity to Kigali City, Kirabo said the area has friendly topography that would facilitate its development.

"Don’t sit back and hope that things will work out for themselves. We want people who will ensure that towns are transformed into centres of development," said the Governor.
