City districts allocate Rwf1.6bn for the needy

KIGALI- The districts of Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge collectively earmarked about Rwf 1.6 billion to help vulnerable groups in their areas.

The three districts in Kigali presented their 2011/2012 draft budgets to the Parliamentary Commission on Budget last week.

In Gasabo, over Rwf 398 million was allocated to support vulnerable groups, including building 80 houses (Rwf 310m) and clear land registration fees (over Rwf 17.2m).

About 1,235 Genocide survivors in Gasabo will also get financial support (Rwf 71m) to start small income generating activities.

In Kicukiro, about Rwf 742m was allocated to the vulnerable groups.

Kicukiro assigned 16 percent (over Rwf 1.2bn) of its total draft budget (Rwf 8.1bn) to good governance and supporting the needy.

Paul Jules Ndamage, Kicukiro Mayor, stated that Rwf "700m will be provided under Vision Umurenge Programme (VUP).”
 
In Nyarugenge District whose budget stands at Rwf 11 billion, over Rwf 414m was allocated to the disadvantaged.

It includes constructing 100 houses, paying tuition fees for Genocide survivors and financial support to people with disabilities.

"Currently, we have 805 vulnerable families that need to be supported,” Solange Mukasonga, Nyarugenge Mayor told The New Times.

In the previous fiscal year, the three districts allocated a total Rwf 1.3bn to help the needy which benefited about 270 vulnerable families with shelter.
