A controversial Aimable Rucogoza’s last kick of the game gave Rayon Sport a home win over Ethiopia’s Harar Beer in the African Confederation Cup yesterday at Nyamirambo stadium. 

The defender’s last penalty was deflected by Harar Beer custodian Beshir Ambaye into his own net as latter reluctantly failed to clear the ball off the goal line.

Rayon Sport will now face last year losing finalists Sudan’s El Merreikh in the second round.

Rayon booked the tie after a 5-4 penalty shoot out as full time had ended 2-0 in favor of the Blues to put with on level terms with Ethiopians who had registered the same score line at home.

Rayon Sport who needed to score 3-0 in their second leg against Harar Beer to overturn the 0-2 goal deficit scored through Roger Tuyisenge and Jimmy Gatete on the 64th and 71st minutes of the second half.

Gatete came on as a substitute for Tuyisenge, curled home a perfect strike outside the penalty box to put the Blues on level.

Rayon Sport penalty kicks were converted by Jean Lomami, Jimmy Gatete, Bonaventure Hategikimana, Bokota Kamana and Aimable Rucogoza in that order while the Ethiopian side scored their penalties through, Tadesse Geletus, Binyam Abedele, Ahmed Said and Mikael Kenua while Samson Yosef could beat Webo in Rayon’s goal.

Rayon’s last continental show came in 2006 when they were dislodged by Egypt’s Al Ittihad Al-Iskandary in the second round.

Last year, Rayon sports missed out on taking part in the continental club championships after finishing third in the Primus national football league.

Meanwhile, Zamalek’s top marksman Amr Zaki recovered from his cold and is ready to feature for the Whites when they face APR in the second leg, first round of the CAF Champions League today in Cairo, Egypt. The international striker had been rested after picking a cold but resumed full trainings tow days ago.

"We have a full squad again. Ahmed Magdi and Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed are still away but that shouldn’t be a problem,” Zamalek’s assistant coach Mohamed Helmi told FilGoal.com.

The Whites have an easy task against APR as they won the first leg 2-1 in Kigali.  Zamalek are fifth of the Egyptian standings with 31 points, seventeen behind leaders Ahli. Apr who arrived in Cairo on Thursday must overturn the 1-2 goal deficit and secure a 2-0 victory to be able to book their second round qualification.

The winner between APR and Zamalek will earn qualification to face the winner between Tonnere FC of Benin and Africa Sports of Ivory Coast in today’s other clash.
