Rwanda’s tennis star Jean Claude Gasigwa face Kenyan rival Francis Rogoi in the semi-finals of the EABL/Fang Fang sponsored Uganda Open Tennis Championship today at Lugogo tennis grounds in Kampala.

The Rwandan star cruised to the semi-finals after seeing off Uganda’s sixth seed Godfrey Uzunga in a dramatic win of 6-2 6-0 yesterday.

His rival, Rogoi eliminated Uganda’s Odong Ruyange 3-6 7-6 6-3 . However, other second round results were unavailable by press time but according to confirmations from Kampala, Zimbabwe born star Martin Dzuwa will face Uganda’s lone flag bearer Robert Buyinza in the other today’s semi-final game.

Rogoi who talked to Times Sport from Kampala yesterday said that his aim this time around is to improve his record against Gasigwa who has defeated him in the ITF/CAT money circuits held in Rwanda and Kampala recently.

"I only defeated Gasigwa in the Burundi money circuit but am ready to challenge him tomorrow (today),” Rogoi said.

However, Gasigwa feels relaxed ahead of today’s crucial tie. "I saw how he played and there is nothing extraordinary he displayed in winning the second round tie against his Uganda opponent, Ruyange,” Gasigwa noted.

Gasigwa who won both the first and second legs of the ITF/CAT money circuits held in Rwanda and Uganda respectively wants to notch the Uganda Open tennis title before heading to Kenya for the final leg of the ITF/CAT money circuit due next week.

Over 145 players are taking part in the three-day revived Uganda Tennis Open with the men’s and women’s singles winners pocketing Frw. 225000 and Frw. 120000 respectively.

East African Breweries Limited has returned to sponsor the event after ten years of absence.
