KIGALI - Gasabo District Mayor, Willy Ndizeye, yesterday said his district has a debt of less than Rwf 100 million.
At the beginning of last year, the district had debts amounting to Rwf 2.2 billion.

The debts which are said to have accumulated during the reign of former Mayor Claudine Nyinawagaga included salary arrears to the district employees, workers’ medical insurance and taxes to Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA).

The Nyinawagaga administration had also acquired funds to finance district development projects which it allegedly failed to implement.

"We have almost paid all debts, with the exception of some few people who had to first go through legal procedures,” Ndizeye said.

He noted that the only supplier, Bani Enterprise, who is yet to be paid was dragged to court after it emerged that he could have won the tender irregularly

The enterprise won a tender to supply food and other equipment to Genocide suspects in TIG (les travaux d ‘interet general) in the district.

"Court cleared him and we received the court ruling which we were waiting for to process the payment. We have the money. Tomorrow, (Monday) he will get his cheque,” said Ndizeye.
