An association of former students of FAWE Girls secondary school, Twesehamwe Family, yesterday honoured veterans in Nyarugunga sector Kicukiro District.

The disabled veterans live in an estate in Nyarugunga built by the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission.

"The sacrifice through which others lost their lives for the love of this country is highly recognised,” Brenda Nkusi, the association`s coordinator, said.

Nkusi noted that as Rwandans commemorate the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, it is equally important to recognise the role played by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in stopping the Genocide.

Sam Ruhorahoza, one of the veterans called for efforts to uphold the truth about the genocide and fight against the genocide ideology.

"We are disabled but grateful of what we managed to do. However, it’s still our responsibility as Rwandans to confront ideas that may take the country back to the dark days,” Ruhorahoza said.

Earlier, the group had visited the Kigali Memorial Genocide Centre to pay respect to victims of the Genocide.

"We feel the pain our loved ones experienced especially girls and women who were raped or abused before they were killed,” said Alice Wamahoro, another member.

She explained that four years back, the association launched a campaign to remember the girls and women killed during the Genocide.
