A total of 186 Rwanda National Police officers serving under the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) received United Nations Medals for their service.

Among the officers recognized, 91 were women.

While officiating at the UNAMID function, Mr. Mohammad Younis, the deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General (DSRSG) appreciated the role played by Rwandan Police officers in achieving their UNAMID mandate.

The UNAMID police commissioner, Mr. James oppong-Boanih, who presented the medals said that Rwandan National Police officers have performed their responsibilities with dignity therefore deserve the medals.
 
"They are neutral, tolerant, polite and professional in the execution of their duties even under difficult circumstances” Mr. Boanih said.

The ceremony that took place in Elfasher, North Darfur was also attended by a delegation of Rwanda National Police comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police John Bosco Kabera and Assistant Commissioner of Police Faustin Kalisa.

The occasion that took place in the South Sudan Capital, Juba was attended by Rwandan Head of Diplomatic Mission in Sudan, Mr. Joseph Rutabana and presided over by UNMIS acting Deputy Police Commissioner, Mr.Hakan.

Mr. Hakan said that the Rwandan Police Contingent was awarded medals for their role in fulfilling the UNMIS mandate of restoring peace in Sudan.

He applauded them for their exemplary performance, professionalism, discipline and good conduct.

Currently, Rwanda National Police has 374 peacekeeping officers serving in UN missions in Sudan, Liberia, and Haiti.
