KIGALI - The Minister of Health and former Permanent Secretary, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho yesterday handed over to the new Permanent Secretary, Dr. Uzziel Ndagijimana, who was recently appointed by cabinet.

At the handover ceremony, Binagwaho noted that Dr. Ndagijimana joins a strong team whose core mission is to ensure that the lives of Rwandans improve through better health programmes and policies.

She outlined the achievements of the ministry and provided a detailed account of all outlined projects, which her successor would play an integral part in implementing.
 
Key among these include the establishment of the Rwanda Biomedical centre (RBC) bringing under one roof close to ten institutions and whose law was recently gazetted.
 
Secondly is the implementation of the countrywide sensitisation programme for the new policy on Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI), which is supposed to take off this July.

 "We are very happy to have you on this team and we believe that backed by your great experience in managerial and education work, you will play a key role in the achievement of the ministry’s goals in line with the health sector plan,” she said.

Before his appointment, Ndagijimana was vice Rector at the National University of Rwanda, having also served as the Rector of the School of Finance and Banking.

Binagwaho also said her ministry’s programmes are guided by the government’s seven year programme, the EDPRS framework and vision 2020. She observed that the Ministry must be focused to ensure that the ambitious targets contained within the blueprints are realised. 

She further underscored the elimination of preventable communicable and non-communicable diseases.  The new PS pledged to work with the team towards attaining the set goals.
