KIGALI - As real estate investment within Kigali city gathers steam in line with the master plan, developers have acquired the plot of land presently occupied by the national office of information, ORINFOR.
Bruno Rangira, the Kigali city council, Director of Communication disclosed that the 6,000 square-metre land, which currently shelters both Rwanda Television and Radio Rwanda was purchased by a Kenyan real estate firm, Executive Investment Limited.
"The company plans to construct eight-storey apartments worth US$6 million dollars,” Rangira said in an interview with The New Times.
The investors who acquired the land for Rwf 900 million are currently awaiting the relocation of ORINFOR before construction begins.
When contacted, acting Director General of ORINFOR, Willy Rukundo, said that the relocation processes are ongoing.
"But it will take between nine and 12 months for the contractor to complete the renovation of the building where we will relocate to,” Rukundo said in a telephone interview.
The institution has acquired the building belonging to Kagera Basin Organisation located in Kacyiru.
He said that currently, there is no building in Kigali with all the specifications required for both television and radio.
"There is no facility in Kigali with the electrification (wiring) system that can accommodate our studios for both radio and television. We sent a detailed report to the Ministry of Infrastructure.” he noted.
By March this year, the Construction One-Stop Centre, which is part of the Kigali city council had issued construction permits worth Rwf 398 billion since its inception a year ago.
