Mukamira Intermediate Court yesterday denied bail to 19 suspects of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), pending further investigation into their alleged crimes.
The suspects, arrested by Rwandan security organs this month, are accused of causing national insecurity by means of arms, according to prosecution.
"Given the grave nature of the allegations, the inconsistency in your statements and insufficient evidence adduced, we find it necessary to deny you bail until after thirty days as investigations go on,” said Clementine Mukahirwa, the presiding judge.
The suspects were sent to remand at Gisenyi prison with a right to appeal the decision within the next five days, according to the prosecution.
According to articles 151 to 164 of the constitution, the suspects face life imprisonment once found guilty.
During the ruling, Mukahirwa explained that the suspects were denied bail due to lack of enough evidence and inconsistent statements..
