One of the most popular radio shows, Urunana, will carry messages to encourage savings and the use of financial services.

This follows a partnership, the show producers have established with Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR).

The bank says financial literacy is vital as most of its clientele are not conversant with managing finances and working with financial institutions.

George Gahenda, the Managing Director of Urunana Development Communication, yesterday told The New Times that they have a one-year agreement with BPR.

"The programme will make people understand how and why they should save so as to improve their economic status. We integrate messages on financial planning – it is about sensitising the population on how to use money wisely and save,” he said.

BPR says the programme’s main themes evolve around issues like budgeting, savings, banking services, and debt management.

The programme will impact on the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to adopt good financial management practices for earning, spending, saving, borrowing and investing.

Other aspects include creating awareness of the benefits of financial planning and building the capacity of low-income households to gain control of their financial resources and better manage their scarce capital.

The show that specialises in behavioural changes is aired on Radio Rwanda, Radio 10 and on BBC Kinyarwanda service, with about seven million listeners in Rwanda and 33 million in the region.
