KARONGI- Hundreds of students from Kigali Health Institute (KHI), Karongi Campus, over the weekend, honoured victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, with a night vigil.

The students were joined by university staff and government officials including Members of Parliament.

During the vigil, the MP Samuel Musabyimana, reminded the students of their role in rebuilding the country.

"Students in higher institutions of learning such as you have a major role in promoting sustainable development of the country," Musabyimana told the students.

He challenged them to actively get involved in activities that promote unity and reconciliation.

"Remembering the innocent victims should not be left to only those who were affected by the Genocide," the MP said.

District Mayor, Bernard Kayumba urged the students to desist from any form of divisionism and various manifestations of the Genocide ideology.

"With the knowledge you have acquired in school, you ought to take a leading role in all aspects of development," Kayumba said.

David Mutole, a second year Environmental Health student, observed that joint efforts were required to help the survivors.

"It is necessary that as we remember the victims who perished during the Genocide, we will also need to help survivors to lead normal lives," Nsengumuremyi added.
