Rwanda’s U-17 national football team has been drawn to face Kenya in the first leg of the preliminary round of the 8th edition of the African championship whose finals are due next year in Algeria.
The U-17 national team will face Kenya on April 11-13 in the first leg which will be played in Kigali before heading to Nairobi for a return leg slated in a fortnight. The winner between Kenya and Rwanda will face Sudan in the first round of the qualifiers on August 29-30.
However, the local football governing body Ferwafa has not named the U-17 national coach despite having less than one month of assembling the team.
Last year’s Under-17 which was managed by Coach Aloys Kanamugire knocked out Somalia 3-0 in the first round before bowing out of the tournament after losing to eventual winners Nigeria in the second round.
Nigeria beat Togo 1-0 in the finals. Meanwhile, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ghana, South Africa, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Zambia, Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Guinea, Benin, Botswana, Sudan and Libya have all landed byes in the first round.
