24 families in Busasamana Sector, Rubavu District, yesterday, received a cow each under the Girinka project, an anti poverty government programme that aims at giving a cow to every poor family.

Under the programme, when the first beneficiary’s cow gives birth, the calf is passed on to a poor person in the neighbourhood until everyone who deserves, receives a cow.

"This is the third time we are giving out cows to residents in this sector; we have so far given out 168 cows since the start of the programme,” said Fidel Niragira, president of the Sector Advisory Council.

The beneficiaries are chosen by the local community since they are familiar with those who deserve a cow in their localities.

"The government hopes that the cows will help to economically uplift the poor families hence improving their standards of living,” added Niragira.

Helena Mukaruyonga, a 75-year old lady, expressed her joy upon receiving her cow and hopes that her life would be transformed.

"I want to thank the President for thinking about the poor like me; now I will be able to get milk to feed my orphaned grandchildren and get manure for my land,” said Mukaruyonga.

80-year old Madeline Nyirabagenzi, another beneficiary, said she would now sell milk to buy essentials like soap, salt and other household needs.

Although some beneficiaries are at an advanced age, Niragira said that the local leadership would help them build kraals and provide them with areas for animal feed.
