Police, motorcycle taxi operators discuss road safety

MUHANGA- Police in Muhanga District have cautioned motorcyclists to abide by traffic rules to minimise accidents in the district.

The call was made by Superintendent Jean Claude Kajeguhakwa , the District Police Commander , this Friday, during a discussion on road safety requirements and security.

The meeting was attended by over 280 motorcycle taxi operators, in Nyamabuye Sector.

The meeting addressed issues of lack of insurance and permits, drunk-driving, over-speeding, overloading, abiding by traffic codes, putting on helmets and respecting of traffic rules in general.

"It’s very evident that the population is growing in the area and the numbers of road users has increased; this calls for cooperation and taking measures on traffic rules so as to avoid accidents,” Supt. Kajeguhakwa said.

He also noted that the police and motorcyclists should work as partners and the target should be a win-win situation through community policing. He encouraged them to vigilant on matters of security by providing information on dubious passengers.

The association of motorcycle taxi operators hailed the National Police for improving the driving permit registration which has reduced the expenses and thus increased the number of residents with permits.

They also made a commitment to mobilize their counterparts to adhere to full requirements and send their members to driving schools for training on traffic rules and road safety as soon as possible.

The association also requested the Police to follow up issues of some of their members who have not yet acquired their driving permits yet they had sat for their driving tests.
