A proposal, this week, by regional lawmakers, to ban polythene bags in the EAC member countries is highly laudable. There is no doubt that if the move succeeds, it would be one way to effectively protect our treasured environment.

As the lawmakers discuss this crucial issue, I would urge other governments to consult Rwanda to learn how it managed the polythene bags quandary.

The Rwandan government passed a law in 2004, to get rid of the bags.

I think Rwanda’s success is due to efforts made by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), which has sensitised the public about the dangers associated with polythene bags use.

Research shows that most plastic bags end up in landfills and take long to biodegrade,  thus undermining productivity, especially in our farmlands. In the long learn, this inhibits agricultural productivity.

Lets thus join efforts to sustain the region’s environment for the sake of the future generation.
