Miss JoJo has pulled out of the Primus Guma Guma Superstar search due to her religious beliefs.

The 26-year-old singer said her religious belief as a Muslim, forbids her from participating in activities considered as taboos.

"I do music for my fans and for all Rwandans, and of course I would have wished to compete for the grand prize, but I won’t allow my sentiments to mislead my fans,” Miss JoJo said.

Speaking to the press on Thursday at Camellia Tea House, Miss JoJo appreciated Bralirwa and the ‘East African Party’ for the initiative, which she said she believes, will help the artists to improve their music career.

However, she insisted that she would not participate in any activity which involves branding alcohol or anything which may tarnish her reputation as a Muslim.

Miss JoJo explained that the reason she pulled out of the competition was because the winner of Primus Guma Guma Superstar will sign a contract to promote Primus for a period of one year.

"It is forbidden for a Muslim to take alcohol or advertise it. However, I haven’t stopped my struggle in my music.

I’ll continue to participate in various concerts and competitions as long as they aren’t against my religion,” Miss JoJo added.

Meanwhile, Massamba, who was also at the press conference, described the Guma Guma Superstar as ‘campaign’ not a ‘competition’ as the organisers claim.

The ‘Hooked On You’ star is due to release her new album ‘Woman’ and brand titled ‘Step Forward’ which will support young and skilled entrepreneurs.

Born and raised in the Eastern Province, Miss JoJo, real name Josiane Uwineza is a renowned R&B artist and has won several music awards, including the Pearl of Africa Music Awards and Salax Awards.

Only ten finalists, who will be unveiled today at Kigali Serena Hotel, will compete for the grand prize of Rwf6 million and record a song with international star, Sean Kingston, among other prizes.
