Valentine Rukundo, a computer science teacher at a neighbouring school, said the heavy rains lasted three hours, before blowing off the roofs of the primary school.
"The children were very lucky considering the magnitude of the destruction and injuries they suffered. Many of them were injured in a stampede,” she said.
Dr. Avit Mutagazwa, who is treating the children, said that there were no serious injuries.
The doctor also told The New Times that three adults were hospitalised on the same day after their houses collapsed on them.
Pio Ruganintwari, the head teacher, said the school authorities are in touch with local leaders and the Board of Governors, to assess the damage.
Rwamagana Protestant Primary school was built during the early 1980s.
