RUBAVU - Five men are being held at Gisenyi police post after a plot to commit fraud at the Rubavu branch  of Bank of Kigali(BK) was foiled by police on Monday.

The five include two former police officers and one demobilised soldier. Police say that  Jean Pierre Kubwimana, Jean Bosco Karemera, Jean Claude Ntamuhanga, Olivier Wahaki and Mathias Mpiranya are under arrest  over alleged conspiracy to steal from the bank.

"We were tipped off by the bank officials after they became suspicious of the people who wanted to withdraw money from another company’s account,” said Johnson Sesonga, Rubavu district police commander.

It is further alleged that the gang had a few weeks ago transferred Rwf3.7 million from an account belonging to BUCOS limited, a construction company, to their own account from BK’s branch in Nyabugogo.

One of the accused, Kubwimana who has since admitted to the crime said that after transferring money from BUCOS limited account, they wanted to withdraw all the money from different BK branches in the country, starting with the Gisenyi branch where they expected to collect  Rwf 937,000.

Sesonga said that Ntamuhanga and Kubwimana were arrested on the spot while attempting to make the withdrawals while the other three initially managed to drive off towards Kigali but police trailed them and eventually arrested them.
