KICUKIRO - Kicukiro District will, this week, start the expropriation exercise of tenants in Kicukiro market to give way for further development in line with the Kigali City master plan.

In an exclusive interview, the district Mayor, Paul Jules Ndamage, confirmed that a group of local investors acquired the current land occupied by the market in Kicukiro Centre to build a multi-billion shopping mall.

"We are currently in the evaluation process to help with the expropriation procedure,” Ndamage said. Over 400 traders are presently operating in the market.

Ndamage said that market vendors would temporarily be moved to Ziniya Market as the district finalises the construction of another modern market.
Ndamage said that the new market would be relocated in Nyanza, Gatenga Sector, with completion set for July next year.

"We got financial support from the Ministry of Public Service and Labour (MIFOTRA) to construct the new market in the next fiscal year,” said Ndamage.

He added that the relocation of the market to Nyanza, he said, would also solve the problem of congestion in Kicukiro Centre, which has been blamed for the  high number of road accidents in the area.

The Rwf300m terminal, inaugurated in March last year has a capacity to accommodate 90 omnibuses and six buses simultaneously.

However, the terminal was abandoned because commuters still use the Kicukiro Centre as their terminal. The new market will be built next to the bus terminal.
Ndamage also revealed that a grocery market worth Rwf 30m would be constructed in Nyanza in the next three months.

According to the master plan, buildings along the Kicukiro Centre-Sonatube road are supposed to have a minimum five storeys.
