Prisons vs NUR
NO one gave them a chance. Now they are in the last four of the CAVB Men’s Africa Club Championship.
Led by the experienced Eric Nsabimana a.k.a Machine, the National University of Rwanda (NUR) yesterday battled their way to the semi-finals after a 3-2 victory over Algeria’s Blida in Cairo, Egypt.
The thrilling contest, which lasted over two hours and 15 minutes, brought the best out of the varsity side.
The Algerian side seemed to be cruising after claiming the first two sets (25-17, 25-12) but NUR crawled their way back into the match by winning the third and fourth sets (25-23, 25-23) to push the tie into a decisive set.
NUR then sealed the historic win with a 15-12 fifth set win to set up a semi-final clash with Kenya Prisons.
After the game, a thrilled NUR coach Fidele Nyirimana lauded the team.
"The boys were awesome in all departments. We started slow but picked ourselves up and that says a lot about this team,” the former national team libero noted.
It is the second time a Rwandan side has reached the last four. In 2004, NUR qualified for the semi-finals in Benin.
The eventual champions will earn a spot at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, set to take place in Qatar later this year.
