GATSIBO-51 elephants from Akagera National park, Tuesday night destroyed crops in Munini Cell, Rwimbogo Sector in Gatsibo District.

According to local officials, the wild elephants destroyed over four hectares of bananas, beans, sorghum and sweet potatoes.

The military had to be called in from Gabiro Barracks to chase the elephants back to the park.

Residents in the area say wild animals often wander from the park and destroy their crops.

"It’s not the first time we are experiencing such an incident,” said Kevin Muranga, one of the affected residents.

In an interview with reporters, Providence Sibomana from Rwanda Development Board (RDB) said that a law is in the pipeline to allow RDB compensate those affected by wild animals from the national park.

"We also intend to construct an electrical perimeter around the whole park,” he said.
