THE National University of Rwanda (UNR) has pledged to support its rugby club ‘UNR Grizzlies’ after the club’s recent heroics.
On top of finishing third on their league debut last year, Grizzlies pulled off an eye-catching show at this year’s Buffalo 7s tournament when they lifted the Plate Cup after upsetting the 2007 champions ‘Lion des Fers’ 12-0.
Grizzlies were also presented with the ‘best sporting team’ award at the same event.
According to a club source, UNR has promised to support Grizzlies in terms of logistics, transport, playing kit and jerseys and also promised sports scholarships to six Grizzlies players.
"The University authorities have promised to provide the club with logistics, transport and a new kit. They have also asked Rwanda Rugby Federation for the 2008 calendar so that they can find a way of scheduling the club’s activities to fit into the university’s academic calendar," the source continued.
"This is a big boost and we are very excited. I think it shows a lot of faith and potential in the team," the club’s coach player Joseph Bugabo said before adding, "It’s also a challenge to the club. We have to work harder and aim for greater heights this year".
