Gisagara-Police in Gisagara district have arrested a cell leader after he allegedly assaulted a local resident he allegedly owed Rwf 20,000.

Dieudonné Kaje, the Executive Secretary of Gasagara Cell, Gikonko Sector, was arrested on Thursday, a week after he reportedly committed the crime.

He is currently detained at Gikonko police station.

According to area residents, the two feuded after Kaje refused to pay back Rwf 20,000 he owed Immaculee Mukashyaka.

"Last week, when I approached him and asked him to pay, he instead attacked me,” she said.

Mukashyaka, a Genocide survivor, sustained injuries on the right side of her jaw in the incident.

The money was compensation for property she lost during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Speaking at Gikonko police station, Kaje said he was acting in self defence. 

"She approached me asking for the money. When I told her to contact me the next day, as I was responding to other people’s demands, she refused and then pulled and ripped my shirt, I pushed her back in self-defence and she fell,” Kaje said.

"It was just an accident; it was not my intention to injure her.”

 "We did not arrest him immediately but gave him time to approach the victim to make amends so the issue could be solved amicably, but he did not.

That is when we decided to hand him over to the police”, a local official said.
Police say that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
